Step 1: Cut the boards

Use a circular saw to cut the cedar boards to the desired length. For this project, we cut the boards to 8′ long.

Lay two of the boards side by side, and use a drill and galvanized screws to attach them together. Make sure the boards are aligned and level before attaching them.

Repeat this process to create the other two sides of the raised bed.

Step 3: Attach the sides

Attach the sides of the raised bed to the ends using galvanized screws. Again, make sure the boards are aligned and level before attaching them.

Step 4: Add the bottom

If you want to add a bottom to your raised bed, now is the time to do so. We used a piece of plywood for ours, but you could also use a piece of metal, or even just the ground itself.

Step 5: Finishing touches

Once the raised bed is assembled, you may want to paint or seal it to protect the wood from the elements.

Now that your raised bed is built, it’s time to start planting!

The first step is to decide on the size and shape of your bed. You’ll want it to be at least 12″ high and wide, to provide enough space for vegetables to grow comfortably. If you have a lot of space, you can make your bed as large as you want, but it’s best to keep it at least 4′ long so you can reach the middle from either side.

Once you’ve decided on the size and shape of your bed, you’ll need to gather some materials. The most common materials are lumber, cinder blocks, or railroad ties. If you’re using lumber, you’ll need to cut it to size and then drill holes in the ends to create anchors that will hold the bed in place.
